Tonight, a massive tsunami, which resulted from an earthquake just 120 kilometers off the coast of Portugal, hit the African as well as the European coast. The earthquake was one of the highest ever recorded, measured 9.2 on the victor scale and sent waves up to 12 metres high against the shores. Over 10,000 people are estimated dead while many others are still missing. In general, it is still unclear how many people are affected but probably more than several thousands.
Portugal and Spain have declared a state of emergency while Great Britain and Ireland are also struggling to help as many people as possible. Many lives could be saved because evacuation efforts started immediately after the earthquake was reported. However, 200 people are still missing in the UK. Emergency Services in Portugal and Spain are helping the affected regions, furthermore the EU pledged to assist these countries.
