In an unprecedented move for the country the government of Azerbaijan has been overthrown from within. It seems that civil unrest in the country and the results of the latest election have led members of the government to believe that Ilham Aliyev is not capable to govern the country anymore. The foreign minister of Azerbaijan seized power and proclaimed to be head of the government of Azerbaijan. This move has been welcomed by the majority of the Azeri public, with the new head of state promising unity for the Caucasus region. As a first sign for the Presidents dedication to unity the Republic of Azerbaijan was renamed to the Unitary Democratic People’s Republic of the Caucasus. International reactions have been mixed and it remains to be seen how the UDPRC will conduct its first policies and decisions.
